Synopsis of Yimeng

During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, in Yimeng, the base area behind the enemy lines, there was a contemporary nursery, where Sister Ying and Ernie were busy with taking care of the young children. Everything seemed peaceful and joyful. Suddenly, the sound of gunfire from the Japanese invaders broke the peace. The troops lined up to leave and defense their homeland, leaving the boy Suona behind for he was failed to join the army.

On the battlefield, the soldiers fought a bloody war and most of them die heroically. When Sister Ying was clearing the war field, she found a heavily-wounded man, who was a Platoon Leader of the Eighth Route Army. As he was dying for water and food, Sister Ying, with no other choices, unbuttoned her coat and determinedly save the man's life with her breast milk…Sister Ying brought the Platoon Leader home. In order to help him get well soon and back to the front earlier, she cooked chicken soup with the only hen of the family.

Another year, at the village entrance there was a recruiting spot. Ernie was so happy to see that her beloved fiancé, the grownup Suona, finally became a military trumpeter as he wished. They parted with love and best wishes to each other. On hearing the bugle call of assembly, Sister Ying, Ernie and the villagers waved the new recruits goodbye.

During the War of Liberation, in the cantonment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the soldiers were training hard to improve military skills, sweating all over; While the sisters in the village were busy with making shoes and sewing clothes, actively supporting the front...

As the days passed, Ernie missed her distant lover so much that she danced with Suona in her dream. There came the news of the troops marching near, Ernie anxiously looked for Suona among the soldiers but failed in vain. The due wedding date was approaching, while with the absence of Suona, Ernie took her vows with a rooster according to the traditional practice.

The peaceful village life was broken again by the rumble of explosions. Meng Lianggu Campaign began. PLA soldiers scrambled to cross the Wenshui River but found that the only bridge had been blown up by the enemy planes. At this critical moment, led by Sister Ying and Ernie, the sisters jumped in to the freezing water and hold high the door planks with their soft shoulders, building a pontoon bridge.

With the trumpet blowing, the soldiers were crossing the pontoon bridge. In the hails of bullets and bombing, Suona was shot unfortunately… Seen the heroic death of Suona with her own eyes, Ernie felt into deep grief. Though the farewell forever, the love eternal…

The bugle sounded through Mengshan mountains and Yishui rivers, which echoed with the inner call of both Yimeng people and the people's army. The great Yimeng Spirit, "the people and the army always together in completely harmony, in life and in death", has been handed down from generation to generation.
