On September 27, 2022, the world premiere of the large-scale original symphony The Symphony and the Opera – the finale of NBC's "Original Symphonic Trilogy", will be staged at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Zhang Yi, NBC's Music Director and a renowned conductor, will lead the NBC Symphony Orchestra, together with a number of outstanding Peking Opera performers from the National Peking Opera Company, to present a new audio-visual feast fusing the beauty of symphonic and Chinese opera.

The large-scale original symphony The Symphony and the Opera consists of an original orchestral suite Three Pieces of Kunqu Opera and an original orchestral Peking Opera Life-saving Doctors.

The original symphonic suite Three Pieces of Kunqu Opera was composed in 2022 by an outstanding young contemporary composer Li Bochan under the joint commission of NBC and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. The three movements correspond to the three scenes entitled "Dream", "Language" and "Sing", respectively.

The original orchestral Peking Opera Life-saving Doctors was written by Zhang Yonghe, a distinguished professor of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, and Zhang Jing, a student of the Academy, and composed by renowned Chinese composer Yu Jingjun.

Directed by performing artist Tuo Zhiguo from the National Peking Opera Company, this five-movement original symphonic Peking Opera will be presented by NBC Symphony Orchestra together with outstanding young Peking Opera performers Wang Yue, Guo Yaoyao, Liu Lei, Zhu Hong and Liu Yang, as well as two Peking Opera orchestra players, Kang Changsheng and Zhuang Xuan.
