From 2002 to 2008, Li Yang received dance training in the field of Chinese Dance at the Secondary School of Beijing Dance Academy. After graduation from Chinese Classical Dance Department of Beijing Dance Academy with master degree in fine arts, Li Yang joint National Ballet of China in 2012.
In 2011, he performed in Fresh Blossom from the North Dance Evening held by National United University of the Arts, Singapore as a guest dancer and danced Yellow River as a Principal. He also choreographed and danced the piece A Tribute to Heroes. During his exchange study at Taipei University of Arts in 2011, he participated in the Danscross project jointly held by Beijing Dance Academy (BDA) Dance Company and Taipei University of Arts, during which he cooperated on the modern pieces Typhoon and Hometown with two other choreographers from Britain and China, and was awarded the title of "Gifted Young Dancer" of the year.
Li Yang won the second prize for choreography in "BDA Cup" Dance Competition in 2011, followed by the golden prize in "Challenging the Future" Dance Competition held by Beijing Dance Academy in 2012. In 2015, Li Yang worked as a choreographer in Lu Chuan's film Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe. In 2016, his work named Aurora was selected for the Taoli Cup Exhibition and Performance. In 2017, he participated in the International Master Class on Choreography organized by the China Foreign Cultural Exchange Association. In 2018, cooperated with folk musician Zhao Lei, Li Yang directed and created the dance video work Diao with the same name of the music work. Then, he choreographed the dance movements of La Traviata for the China National Opera House and participated in the performance. In 2019, he choreographed Scalding Flowers, a one-act dance ballet work. As a director and screenwriter, he created the micro film The Track. In the same year, at the invitation of the Edinburgh Art Festival, the Chinese consulate general in Manchester and art China, Li Yang create the dance drama "a demoisile rain" as a gift to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
He has choreographed a handful of works for National Ballet of China such as Light, Never Give Up, The Girl with Black Eyes, Then and Here, Diao and the male dance of sacrifice in The Puppeteer. His works were selected to put on stage at Zhongnanhai to welcome Queen of Denmark for her visit. While as a dancer, he has danced in many repertoire of the Company, such as The Red Detachment of Women, The Little Mermaid, Confucius 2012, Awakening, Raise the Red Lantern, The Nutcracker (Chinese Version) , The Peony Pavilion, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Xianglian, the Competing Lotus, Giselle, The Yellow River, La Chauve-Souris, Romeo and Juliet, La Bayadère and The Light of Heart.
