Gong Xun


Gong Xun is the stage designer of the National Ballet of China and also a recipient of Excellent Stage Design from Wenhua Award.

As one of the most active stage visual artists of the country in recent years, Gong Xun's works were presented in major international festivals like Edinburgh International Festival and mainstream theatres as well as arts centers around the world. With diversified design concept and international vision, his design thinking is extremely active.

His design of "The Nutcracker (Chinese Version)" for the National Ballet of China was reviewed as "refreshing, gorgeous, a dream space with Chinese verve"; "Marco Polo", the ballet with Shanghai Ballet, was praised to be "beautiful, romantic and exquisite like an immersive mirage"; while the "Coppélia" for Suzhou Ballet was said to "keep the innovative style and the ambitious as well as the surrealistic ways of design leaves the audience with rich imagination space" . He has collaborated with Lin Zhaohua Theater Studio in The Great Architect, The Assassin, Five Acts of Life Lao She's Short Stories and Ivanov etc.; with composer Qu Xiaosong in Life on a String; with director Li Liuyi in the opera Oedipus the King, Prometheus Bound, Spring in Small Town and The Cherry Orchard while with musician Ye Xiaogang in the opera named Yongle. His other works include many genres in collaborations with famous directors like Le Sacre de Printemps, Song of the Earth, The Lady from the Sea, New Youth, Dreams of Zen and Mei Lanfang Classics, The Tea Spell, Painted Skin, The Demon Within etc.

His distinctive and innovative designs allow Gong Xun to work and explore in many different genres of performing arts. The living force in his stage works brings the audience spiritual inspirations and unique visual experiences.
